Varicose Veins
Venous Insufficiency / Varicose Veins Definition
Varicose veins are the bulgy, ropey large veins on the legs. Varicose veins are not just a cosmetic problem. Left untreated, this problem leads to worsening pain, swelling, unhealthy skin of the legs, and sometimes skin ulcers or restless leg symptoms.
Vein Severity Classification
This classification system is termed the CEAP system. When discussing with our vein colleagues or to define severity of a person’s vein disease, really only the “C” of CEAP is relevant. “C” severity ranges from 0-6 (least to worst).

Varicose Vein Treatment Technologies
There are several technologies that VSA can use to treat varicose veins.
Conservative Therapy for Varicose Veins
Short of curative minor vein procedures performed by the providers of Vein Specialists of Alaska routinely, these are the recommended things to lessen the clinical severity of the pain/swelling associated with venous insufficiency/varicose veins of the legs.
Restless Leg Syndrome
Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is an aggravating condition that many people suffer with. It typically causes restless symptoms in one or both legs that is most bothersome once the affected person is off their legs, usually in the evening or at night after retiring to bed.
Varicose Vein Consultations
The evaluation is centered on history pertinent to any prior vein problems you have suffered, prior vein procedures, any symptoms you are experiencing in your legs, family history of vein or clotting problems, a physical exam with palpation (touching) and visualization of the legs, and most importantly, a venous ultrasound of the legs.
